Cardio & Strength, Do We Really Need Both? This week I have started putting my daily workouts on my blog. You can find the first here. I have a dedication to helping people live a happy healthy life through my blog. I am going to make every effort to give my readers the information needed to do exactly that. I would like to start with addressing the fact that we need to eat healthy foods, and perform both cardio and strength training exercises to obtain and maintain optimal health.

It can be very challenging to plan out an exercise routine which incorporates everything you should be doing for an ideal level of fitness. How do you fit it all in? Leg day, arm day, AB day, strength day, cardio day, the list can go on and on. Through my routines, I am going to show you how to do both, but first I want to help you to understand that both strength and cardio training are needed. Leaving out strength training will hurt your efforts to maintain your fitness level as you grow older.


Women especially tend to skip strength training, often because they worry about building up unattractive muscle. However, unless you are going through intense training, say for a body building competition, it is nearly impossible for women to appear more bulky than toned from lifting weights. Most women live with the notion that lifting anything more than lightweight dumbbells isn’t necessary, but building long lean muscle will help to increase your metabolism and maintain a healthy weight.



Most of us already know how important it is to incorporate cardio into your workout schedule. The recommended amount of cardio is at least 150 minutes per week. It is ideal to do 30 minutes, 5 days per week, but can be done as 50 minutes, 3 days per week. Some excellent examples of cardio include biking, hiking, kettlebells, brisk walking, jogging, jump roping, trampoline exercises, and swimming. There are many, many other ways to sneak cardio in. In fact by using HIIT you can do both cardio and strength in one quick workout. I will be posting my HIIT workouts also.


Why they are better together

Any kind of physical exercise has major health benefits. Yet, when strength and cardio are combined you are addressing most of the physical components of exercise that lead to a fit body. Combining both will not only burn calories but also strengthen your muscles, giving you strength and the toned, lean appearance that we desire.

  1. I’ve been starting to lift heavier weights and I am definitely not bulking up but slimming down. Since I’m over 40, I’m trying to build my muscles and stave off osteoporosis which runs in my family.
